Update on Maltby's Environmental Projects

Coronation Park Doorstep Greens

Coronation Park, (shown right - click image to enlarge), continues to be developed by the Friends of Maltby Parks in partnership with Groundwork, RMBC Green Spaces and Maltby Town Council. The Doorstep Greens project has really gained momentum in the last year with footpath and entrance improvements that have vastly improved the access in and around the park. We are now developing the final phase of this programme, which will lift the appearance of the park and give it a real identity.

Later this year, work will start on the planting of trees, shrubs and bulbs in the park and in the spring a wildflower meadow will be created on the banking, which should give the park a colourful show of flowers during the year. An artist has also been commissioned for the artistic Entranceway project. She will work with groups and young people who use the park to develop entrance features to the park. Keep a look out next year for the improvements!

Cherry Tree Park

The Cherry Tree Park Task Group has been working with Groundwork for over two years on the large open space between Birks Holt and White City estates. Last year saw the completion of the play facilities on the park and young people can now enjoy a brand new play area and kick about area. The group are now working to complete the safety project. Lighting has been installed on the two main walkways across the park and we are now looking to secure the access around the park from vehicles.

Manor Fields Skate Project

This project has been slow in developing but this should pick up over the next year as further funding has been approved for the project. The project will provide one of four strategic skate parks for the borough and will be developed with the Friends of Maltby Parks and young people who will use it in the future.

Maltby Entranceway

Groundwork has been working with Maltby Town Council to develop entrance features to the town. The Hellaby Bridge project will be completed by the end of the year and involves the construction of a large wall mounted with an artistic metal sign, surrounded ornamental grasses and shrubs. This will be one of a series of entrance features to the town planned over the next few years.

Other Plans for the Future

A full application has been made to Objective 1 through the Maltby, Thurcroft and Hellaby Integrated Development Plan for two public square projects. These were identified in the Community Plan and will improve the area to the frontage of Maltby library and the area to the front of the Edward Dunn and the new SureStart 'Stepping Stones' building.

Maltby Festival, 20th August 2005

The Maltby Festival is a one day event to celebrate the people and places of Maltby. There will be several different events happening over the town, on the 20th August, which includes the Town Council’s Horticultural Show; the Opening of the New Sure Start Centre; Water Madness at the Swimming Baths; Story Telling (with refreshments) at Maltby Library and a Gala in Maltby’s Coronation Park.

This event is steered by the Town Council, the Friends of Maltby Parks, VAR, Maltby CDT, RMBC (Parks Development), Groundwork Dearne Valley, the Parish Church and others.

The idea behind the festival is to show the people of Maltby what the area can offer them. It is a prime opportunity for local clubs, groups, organisations and associations to promote themselves and increase participation numbers. Statutory services will also be available, allowing people to find out what is currently on offer.

Carl Pedley, The Parks Development Ranger (funded by the Big Lottery Fund) is keen on encouraging users of the park and would like to offer an invitation to other groups within the area to take part; this could be stalls, workshops, fun & games, etc. Carl is also keen on finding entertainers and performers, who could entertain during this day; if anyone is interested in participating please contact Carl on 01709 819 030.

Work starts on Cherry Tree Park

Work has started on Cherry Tree Park (formerly known as Tip Field) with the construction of brand new play facilities. The Cherry Tree Park task group, part of the White City and Birks Holt Partnership, have been working for over a year on the development of the park. Assisted by Groundwork Dearne Valley they have raised over £120,000 for the improvements which will provide a much-needed children's play area, a kickabout area, sheltered seating and lighting to improve safety on the park. The plans were all developed through consultation with residents on both estates and work with young people from Maltby Linx Youth Participation Group.

The Cherry Tree Park Task Group says 'Both of our estates have been working together for children and future families. We hope this will lead to other groups working together towards more facilities for children in Maltby.'

Funding for this project has come from Living Spaces, the Big Lottery Fund's Fair Share 'Transforming Your Space' grant, Landfill Tax credit funding from Waste Recycling Group Plc (administered by WREN), R.M.B.C.'s Housing Regeneration Scheme, Maltby Town Council and R.M.B.C. Green Spaces Unit.

The project has also been supported throughout by the partnership comprising the Friends of Maltby Park's, Maltby Town Council and R.M.B.C.

New Park Development Ranger for Maltby

I am taking this opportunity to introduce myself to some of the local community organisations and to outline a few possible ways that we could work together. My role, which is new to the area, is intended to increase the use and community participation in Maltby's urban parks and green spaces; helping organisations such as yours to make better use of these areas.

There are many events and activities that could become a regular feature of Coronation Park or Cherry Tree Park (or other green spaces in the area), however the key to success for these rely on participation by local clubs, groups and associations such as yours. Events that your organisation could become involved with, may include:

Working together, we can improve the profile of your group, provide activities for Maltby and enhance the use of the parks.

Working together will maximise our achievements and provide the community with a range of much-needed events and activities. I am more than happy to work with and support your group with any such activity. This could be organising, promoting or helping to raise funding if needed. I can also help with risk assessments and all aspects of health & safety.
